Johnny lived a troubled life,
And struggled from day to day.
Lost his wife and lost his son,
Swear he walked away.
Just an old, worn out soul
Ripped right at the seems.
It seemed his only friend in life,
Was a bottle of Jim Beam.
Another early Sunday morning
August of '94
Johnny stumbled up the steps to those old church doors
He took a seat in the back row pew
With whiskey on his breath
The preacher made his way up front, and this is what he said:
Welcome you sinners, the weakened one
I know your souls are torn
But give your life to God above
And experience the power of love
Johnny just shook his head,
And stumbled back outside.
Once again he'd gotten beat
By the same old foolish pride.
He thought about the wife he'd lost,
And the son he never knew.
Then he hit his knees and cried to God,
'Cause he knew those words were true.
Welcome you sinners, the weakened one
I know your souls are torn
But give your life to God above
And experience the power of love
Five years down the road
August of '99
Johnny went to Sunday church
With a different state of mind.
His wife and son were right up front
To hear him preach the words
He spoke about the life he found
To the tired, lame, and hurt.
Welcome you sinners, the weakened one
I know your souls are torn
But give your life to God above
And experience the power of love
Yes, I experienced the power of love
